Everlast was hired to resurface deteriorating concrete veneer on a raised cinder block terrace over a garage and repoint 2 sets of brick stairs with some minor brick relaying. They would also sand and repaint the rails on the terrace. Price was competitive with a couple other bids, but thy would do more work than others with 15 yr warranty. I gave 50% deposit on 15000 job.1st day on job, they said one set stairs had to be rebuilt due to disintegrating substructure and one terrace wall needed lath reinforcing with concrete veneer. Added $9500 and asked another 50% down.1st set of stairs took 3 tries to get repaired bricks flush and level. The 2 laborers had bad skills and put broken bricks back in twice. Repointing is very sloppy.2nd set of stairs leads to terrace landing. They put new bricks on crumbling substructure and top step was 9" deep on left and 10" on right. I had them dismantle the steps.Next attempt on stairs, they rebuilt substructure and laid steps too high for Mass code and step depths were not equal (10", 10" and 13"). I complained & after arguing with the frontperson who kept trying to justify work despite math and Mass code, they agreed to relay bricks.3rd try, they removed all the bricks I had chosen and subbed in poor quality bricks. They forgot to raise one of the hand rails and had to cut bricks so the lower bar of the rail could pass through. Now rails are different heights. At least rises and runs are equal, but horizontal mortar lines on riser faces are all over the place.In midst of the project I canceled other work on terrace because they wouldn't prep walls right, tried to raise price again on terrace surface & never discussed getting permit.As I phased out tasks, the frontperson kept devaluing removed tasks and inflating remaining tasks. $10K was lowest he'd go and he would return $3K from the $13K down only if I signed a form saying I won't give ANY reviews. I refused and am out $13K with stairs that have to be rebuilt.
Our new stone pathway turned out perfect. The team worked efficiently, and the finish is flawless. Everything looks elegant and strong. I’m genuinely happy with how professional and careful they were throughout the entire process.
