Recent reviews frequently highlight fast response on estimates, clear communication, and on-schedule deck builds. Many customers note respectful crews and tidy job sites. A smaller number of reviews mention concerns on a past concrete pour and follow-up, while the majority describe consistent results on deck projects.
Drew and his crew did an amazing job building our deck! Drew came to our house to give us an estimate the same day I called (which seems to be rare) and gave us a very fair estimate. He booked us in the schedule and kept us informed on the timeline per request. I had requested a few changes before they started and even one the day of and they were so gracious to transition with no issues. The four guys that built our deck were very respectful, knowledgeable and efficient. I would recommend this company to everybody!
**Bad Experience — Read Before You Sign**I waited 2 years to post this hoping they'd make it right. They haven't. I should have posted sooner.I hired Scholten Construction to pour a new concrete driveway. The work was defective, and when I raised concerns they gave me assurances they never intended to keep, stonewalled, and waited for me to go away.**Workmanship failures:**- Largest pour done the night of a freeze without proper covering- Rebar left flat on the ground — not elevated per industry standards (I have video)- Base not properly compacted- Relief cuts not done correctly**What that produced:**- 3 slabs with full-length, full-depth cracks and others with cracked sections — all within the first year; large curb and gutter crack within four months (approximately 45 feet of cracks)- Dozens of surface holes within 24 hours, patched with grout that is now cracking and popping out- Widespread pitting across the first pour — salt has never been used on this surfaceThey promised to replace the curb and cracked section near the garage. Neither was ever done. Every defect — the cracks, the holes, the pitting — were dismissed with excuses. These were avoidable.**Also worth knowing:** their contract forces you into arbitration. There is currently only one arbitrator in South Dakota, which makes meaningful resolution extremely difficult in practice. How a contractor handles mistakes is what really counts. Based on my experience: they don't.See attached photos — a small sample of the damage.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Drew, thank you for responding. To clarify for anyone reading: this offer has existed for 2 years and nothing has ever been scheduled or completed. I should not have to chase a contractor to fix their own defective work. And I have approximately 45 feet of cracks through out the driveway and gutter. As for leaves — the issue is dozens of surface holes that appeared within 24 hours of the pour and were patched with grout. Leaves did not cause that. What did cause it was a pour done the night of a freeze without proper covering, which was your responsibility, not mine. If it was covered, how did leaves do that damage? The offer to fix one section doesn't address the full scope of the damage documented in my review.
Drew and his team did a great job with the new deck project they did for me. Communication and quote was quick and clear and the work was done on schedule. Well done quality work that resulted in a beautiful new deck!
I had a great experience with Drew from start to finish. They completed the job quickly without cutting corners, and the final result looks fantastic. I’d definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a quality deck.
July 2025--I had a wonderful experience with Scholten Construction, specifically Drew. From initial estimate to completion of my deck remodel, Drew was very communicative and quick to answer and questions that I had throughout the process. The decking crew was very respectful of my property and did a fantastic job with the project. I couldn't be happier with how my deck turned out!
