Best speciality Lumber yard hands down. The pricing is very competitive (always significantly less than big box stores for your standard domestic woods) and the quality of product is incomparable to anywhere else ive seen in terms of both quality and selection.Through spending time here ive both expanded my knowledge and my craft and got to know the owners/staff who are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. The Lumber yard is always bustling with lots of staff who are all from the local community... its a business worth supporting!
I will start with the good. I have always been happy with the wood at Century Mill and the staff are mostly friendly and helpful. Everyone has a bad day sometimes. Not sure what happened today (Oct 3). I called up to ensure they had the wood I needed as from time to time stock has been unavailable (totally understandable, hense the call). I also checked hours on Google and the Website, both showing 5pm.I then made the 35 to 40 minute drive to get the wood. I arrived at 3:50 pm to find the gate closed and chained. I called the shop 4 times due to hours showing 5pm. No answer so I left message.Very disappointed. When I called to confirm the lumber in stock, no one mentioned closing early.Time and Gas wasted! Not what I have come to expect from this store.
Good selection of lumber: both domestic and exotic. You can find some very good pieces if you take the time. Definitely a step above regular hardware stores like home depot, etc. Most pieces are in 4/4 boards. 8/4s are much rarer and priced at a decently higher rate (just a few domestics + 3 or so exotics as of 2023). Not a large selection for wood turners. The pricing can be inconsistent. Depending on who's helping you, they might round to the nearest foot or half foot -- which is sometimes favorable and other times not. The policy for buying smaller cuts is also inconsistent, again, depending on employee. Some ask you to leave 4-5' remaining on exotic woods, others ask you to leave up to 6'. Some allow you to discard 1-2" of checking from ends of boards, others say that's not okay. Some say you can cut first as long as you're comfortable, others say you need to call them first. Those cases -- we ultimately worked it out since both sides were acting in good faith. But admittedly it's not a great feeling getting told you did something wrong. The store is convenient for me because of its proximity. But for the above reasons I'm planning to check out Exotic Woods in Burlington next time (which is about 2 hours more driving for me).Disclosure: purely personal review. I was referred to Century Mill Lumber by a local workshop to purchase wood for a class project. I was really happy with the experience. The staff helped breakdown pricepoints accurately for me as I looked through selection, and they also helped me approximate the amount of short lengths I required for my project without overspending (but enough for me to prevent a second trip/another purchase.)I ended up purchasing cherry and I found the pricepoint affordable, and the staff took the time to hand pick the boards for me to ensure I had quality pieces to work with.I am a beginner and this was my first time purchasing and working with rough cut lumber, and I'll definitely return to Century Mill for my next project.
5 stars all day long.Lumber mill says it all! Where Century Mill excels is their selection of pine and hemlock, oak, maple, walnut, well everything!Rough lumber, finished boards, live edge, slabs they have it all. Hardwood, softwood, exotic and cedars.Give them a call, drop by, send an email, you can get the info you need for really good prices.Big box stores are convenient, but Century Lumber Mill creates an experience that is unrivalled. Your purchase invests in sustainable forestry and into the community. Check them out, you will not be disappointed!
