I was genuinely excited to buy a home with Alturas and had a great experience working with Katrina—she was kind, professional, and even met with me on Mother’s Day. I truly appreciated her throughout the process.

As a first-time homebuyer, I entered this journey with hope, trust, and the desire to find the right home. I didn’t walk away from Alturas—they ultimately chose not to work with me. And while I understand that not every buyer-builder relationship works out, I want to be clear: I tried everything I could to move forward.

My first offer was on a smaller home in the Arbor subdivision. The inspection revealed several issues, including:
1. Bowed walls
2. Damaged siding with exposed nail heads and holes
3. Water damage in the garage
4. Unfinished fencing I was expected to pay for
5. Visible tape lines, caulking issues, and inconsistent paint
6. Flushness and general finish issues throughout the home

Rather than walk away, I redirected my offer to their model home, hoping the issues would be resolved or non-existent. Instead, they were worse. Still, I remained engaged. I offered to buy another home, wait until August, or even walk away from $30,000 in earnest money just to make the deal work. That’s not “changing direction”—that’s trying to stay in the process.

What may have been missed in all this was my experience with my realtor. There were gaps in communication and things I didn’t fully understand at the time—because I’m not a builder, and this was my first home purchase. I wasn’t trying to be difficult. I was trying to navigate something big and unfamiliar, and I could’ve used more clarity and empathy along the way.

What hurts more than anything is that, instead of understanding or compassion, I later discovered that Alturas had spoken negatively about me to other builders in the area. This kind of behind-the-scenes judgment has made it more difficult for me to work with others—and I’ve since learned I’m not the only one who’s experienced this kind of builder “circle” treatment.

Alturas recently responded to my review by saying they were “perplexed” by its evolution—as though my opinion shifted based on how much attention I was given. The reality is, my opinion shifted because of how I was treated, and how others were encouraged to treat me afterward. When someone likes your product and is actively trying to buy it, dismissing them because of misunderstandings—especially without ever sitting down to work through them—is deeply disappointing.

Let the photos and inspection speak for themselves. Maybe the issues bother you, maybe they don’t. But what should bother all of us is a system that can quietly damage someone’s name and opportunities for simply asking questions or feeling unsure in a very complex process.

At the end of the day, I didn’t want to leave Alturas. I liked their homes. I tried everything I could to make it work. And I wish this story had ended differently.

We sold that house in 2025 and purchased another Alturas home!! What do I like best about living in a new Alturas home? If I must choose, it's the kitchen. Or is it the living room with its lofty ceiling or the view out the dining room window? I can't decide.

Alturas not only builds beautiful homes, but takes care of its customers as if we were part of their family. From day one we have been nothing but impressed and grateful for the Alturas team. They stand behind their homes and warranty items were fixed with ease and in a timely manner. We recently had a leaking faucet and naturally this happened when my husband was out of town-John from Alturas was quick on the spot and took care of it, leaving me one less thing to worry about.
