We have built a total of 7 homes including the one with James Engle. We have been in the home a little over a year and we are just finishing the warranty work. I do not give 5 stars to anything - this is the exception. Their creativity, quality and desire to deliver the home we had envisioned is unparalleled. We have had mostly marginal experiences building the other 6 homes. Our experience with the Engle is unlike any of the other 6. When people visit us in our home and see the balance of functionality, quality and design beauty, their first question is "Who was your builder?" We tell them Jim Engle and to put him at the top of your list if you are considering building a home.
We built with James Engle 3 years ago and the entire experience with them has been wonderful! Every person we have worked with has been extremely easy and accommodating even years later! If we build again down the road we will use them again!
Jim has proven to be unbelievably difficult to work with. From the initial contract negotiation, to the basement finish to the warranty work I have found him to be completely unreasonable. I have warranty work that needs to be completed and have held back less than 1% of the total price of the house, including basement finish (which was ALL prepaid) in order to get some pretty significant drainage problems fixed. He won't even answer the phone to talk with me, but he does threaten to send the issue to his lawyers. I will never work with him again and suggest anyone else stay far away. He won't even have a conversation, has never actually been to my house since the purchase and I have no indication that he will ever finish the work. What kind of business owner treats their customers that way? Jim Engle seems to think it's ok.
I am both a real estate broker and a home builder myself - we sell more than 100 homes a year on a consistent basis. More often than not we sell homes that we do not build. Having built over 200 of my own homes and selling more than a thousand resale homes over the past 20 years I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that there isn't a builder in Kansas City with a better process or better customer service than James Engle Custom Homes. I will never forget my first experience with them when one of our clients built from the ground up. The experience was beyond 5 star with impeccable hand holding and timely points of customer service throughout. Every question was answered, every concern was addressed. There was zero contention and throughout the whole process we felt like we were a team with the builder and we were all in it together. We follow up with our client for years to come and during our check ins we asked about warranty and follow up - again 5 stars, our clients were thrilled. When out showing our clients potential new homes, it is our pleasure to point out James Engle Homes first and share our fabulous past experiences. Just this morning I spoke with Mr Engle himself about several of his new builds. He was incredibly kind and helpful. If you are considering a new home - James Engle should be at the very top of your list.
