Having lived in Fort Lauderdale for nearly ten years, one of the unique aspects of this experience has been the presence of lizards, especially the colorful, prehistoric-looking iguanas that are ubiquitous to South Florida. Last summer, upon returning home one day, I noticed about 5-6 iguanas seeming to sun themselves on our undoubtedly hot, barrel-style tiles up on the roof. This bemused me and it brought me back to my childhood memories of cheesy horror films where an iguana was filmed looking like a gigantic dinosaur against an obviously miniaturized version of a generic metropolis. I imagined the reptiles looking down at me from my rooftop were equally amused that they permitted humans and canines to dwell below their adopted home.Recently, I became worried about the presence of these housemates and whether they were in fact causing some unknown damage up there on top of the home. So, after some major trimming around the house to limit their access to getting up there, I was glad they apparently had left. However, the next day I looked up and saw three iguanas smirking at me at how they had foiled me. So, I contacted Iguana Exterminators, Inc. and spoke with a very nice man, named John who asked about our situation and the address so he could do a Google Map to see what kinds of reptilian access could be gleaned from above. He mentioned he could come as soon as Monday or Tuesday so long as there were no dogs, pool or lawn maintenance going on that could spook the critters. So Monday upon coming home after a Costco run, one of our pooches, Jazzi, began barking wildly at the sliding glass doors leading to the backyard. After letting her out back, she immediately zeroed in on one of the larger iguanas, cornered it behind some plants and then, unfortunately, managed to chase it into the house! After some intense panic about how this was going to turn out, It dawned on me to let Jazzi catch the lizard. She had done a great job previously of ridding our backyard of the errant animals, so we sicced her on the stranger in our house. She dispatched the iguana and then we trashed it. Strangely enough, as if mourning their comrade, three smaller green iguanas jumped into our swimming pool trying to escape the ever-vigilant Jazzi, who was hot on their trail. This time, me and my husband scooped the creatures into separate garbage bags and they were added to the trash heap. So that's four, count 'em -- 4 iguanas within an hour. Before we could contemplate starting a new side business from this incredible series of events, I went outside to retrieve groceries from the car and upon looking up at the roof, YES, another iguana was up there glaring down at me. Quite coincidentally, John the Iguana Exterminator had called me to see about stopping by since it was a nice warm day. I mentioned our morning's activities, and he agreed to stop by within 30 minutes. While on site, we communicated via text messaging so as to provide as little noise and potential disruption to our unwanted guests. After about 30 minutes, John advised that he believes he got them all -- 4 more iguanas (one from the roof, two from our seagrape tree and one from the geiger tree near the house) and that I could come out to meet him...see the accompanying pic. He went over how they were likely getting up there, how to minimize their reappearance, and how to go forward. While the shrub and tree trimming around the house may have helped, it probably wasn't enough as the iguanas can jump from 3-4 feet away from a shrub to the house and back. I narrowed the main culprit to the very tall, quick-growing clusia hedge that while providing great privacy between our house and that of our neighbor, it also unfortunately gave easy access to the eaves of our house which were lower in height than the clusia. John was incredibly responsive, knowledgeable, professional, had good humor, was clean and full of helpful information about an odd situation. I highly and full-heartedly recommend John Bull (the owner) and his superb Iguana Exterminators, Inc.
I had a great experience with John @ IGUANA EXTERMINATORS INC. He was kind, extremely professional, knowledgeable, and calm throughout the process. He safely and efficiently removed multiple iguanas from the property, including one that was in a very difficult location. He took the time to explain what he was doing, why iguanas tend to return, and what to expect moving forward. Everything was handled quickly, humanely, and with respect for the community and surrounding homes.Living in South Florida, this is unfortunately a common issue, and it was a huge relief to have someone who clearly knows what they’re doing. I truly appreciate the responsiveness, professionalism, and results. I would highly recommend this service to anyone dealing with iguanas.
