James River Construction, LLC

I have nothing but glowing things to say about James River Construction. We used them to renovate our kitchen, dining area, and wet bar. This involved a complete gut and redo - walls down, floors torn up and underlying concrete ground and polished, all new cabinets/counters/appliances/lighting, etc.

We have a mid-century house and wanted to stay true to the integrity and character of the house. James River's online portfolio contained a lot of more traditional/modern style kitchens, but I chose to meet with them initially based on their wonderful reviews. From the moment of my first interaction with them, it was clear they were invested in our project and would be able to execute our vision of an updated mid-century space.

Everyone on our project was professional, kind, patient, easy to reach, and very responsive. We were never made to feel needy when we had questions, design changes, etc. Ben was wonderful in coordinating the project at the start and went above and beyond to help us when other unrelated problems in the house arose (leak in the basement, AC going out). Field was our design manager and was amazing at helping us navigate the design and finishes for the space and coordinating and accompanying us to all of our appointments with various appliances and materials vendors. Steven was our project manager and truly made this experience seamless. His coordination of the subcontracted crews kept the project sailing forward with minimal "wasted" downtime. He was always available to us and was wonderful about communicating any questions, issues, or concerns in order to ensure that the space turned out exactly as we wanted it to. He was able to troubleshoot some trickier issues when they came up. In addition, he was physically present at the house throughout the project, even going so far as to vacuum or tidy up the space at the end of the day after the other crews had left.

Overall, the quality of the work was wonderful, and the cost completely fair. You can tell that James River Construction takes pride in their product. It seems like most folks have renovation horror stories, but the opposite is true for us with James River - we feel like we found a unicorn! We would recommend them to anyone, and we will use them again in the future for other projects.

Over the last 20 years our family has lived through seven major renovations, with three different contractors, across two different homes in Richmond. Our last three projects were all with JRC and we will never use any other contracting firm again! Their consultative approach, attention to detail, quality craftsmanship, communication, project management and support are truly second to none. Their project managers (Steven, Matt and Lee) are the best in the business and have remained friends of our family long after our jobs have been completed. We could not be more happy with their work and would encourage anyone considering a project to use JRC, they are the best!

James River Construction (JRC) just completed a total renovation of my 65 year-old home that I grew up in and recently inherited. My entire experience with my JRC team was wonderful. They truly understood my vision of bringing the house up to date and making it mine while still paying respect to the bones of the house that I knew so well.

I had a core team member for each phase of the project, planning, design and construction. They worked very well together and with me. I truly felt like we were all in this together. I liked that they had me do a walk-thru every two weeks to see what had recently been done and what they were about to do. That allowed me to raise any questions or concerns as we went along so that they could be addressed then instead of waiting to the end.

The finished project is amazing! What a transformation!. I feel like I'm living in a new house. Although I'm glad the project is finished so that I can now enjoy living in the house, I'm actually going to miss having my JRC team around. I don't think you can say that about too many contractors. They were always professional, kind, and did great work. They became like family to me. I highly recommend them for any renovation project.

My wife and I couldn't be happier with choosing James River Construction to add a master suite addition to home. With an 1800s farmhouse we knew it would be a complicated build and were worried a new addition to our home could look out of place. The James River Construction team put so much thought into matching the right materials and had such high quality craftmanship that we could barely tell where our old house stopped and the new addition started! Our project manager Jimmy was always responsive, organized, and clear about the next steps of the project. They were spot on for what the final costs could be even in their initial estimate and were very fair with their pricing when we compared to proposals from other companies. And finally, they stuck around even after the project was finished to make sure every single thing was taken care of. It was clear after working with several members of the James River Construction Team that they were professional and clearly cared about the quality of their work. We consider ourselves lucky to have chosen James River Construction for our project and hope to use them again in the future!

We worked with James River Construction on an extensive renovation and addition. James River’s craftsmanship, professionalism, and attention to detail are all first class. I’ll also highlight their communication, honesty, and integrity. We would absolutely use them for another project of our own and highly recommend them to anyone.
