Reviews frequently mention clear communication and helpful guidance throughout permitting and installation. Many customers praise polite, professional crews and tidy job sites. Timelines can extend over several months, but most reviewers report systems performing as expected once online.
Nathan was our go to guy from start to finish on our 12.9 kWp ground mount system. He was great, always polite, professional and prompt. He walked us through the whole process and politely answered all the questions we asked. The install crews were also polite and professional. The system looks great and is working as proposed. Two thumbs up!
All set in Newton Iowa. They are right. It takes 6 months to get it up and going. My experience was they would work on one thing, take the rest of the month off and come back the next month for about every project they started. Our system was approximately 58K and we will hopefully get about 17K back in tax breaks. I asked for 100% free electric bills in the amount of panels we put up. First month (August) it was free electric. 2nd month (September) is we used $272 in electric and our solar panel created $164 in free electricity. So my bill the 2nd full month was we "get" to pay $124 which was disappointing, but it is what it is. Not a great return on investment at all, but that money would just sit in a stock market account until I died doing nothing but generating more positive cash flow, hopefully. Another positive is the panels as of today according to the "APP" is we have done enough putting these panels in, to equate to 68 trees being planted in the 2.75 months we have the panels up and running. We have also saved 9044 lbs of CO2 emissions, whatever that means. So we got that going for us. I do not know how many trees and CO2 was burnt thru to create the panels and metal support braces and for transporting the panels. But I feel maybe and hopefully in the long run this makes a difference in someones life down the road. From looking at the utility bills for the 2.75 years we have live at this house, the September bill is two thirds less than what it was last year and more than 1/2 what it was 2 years ago. I also "got" to put up a $4K fence to partially block the view from the neighbors as she was not happy. The new fence blocks the support ground beams view, but not the solar panels view for her, as if the fence was any higher it would block the sun. We have a lifetime shingle put on our roof 5 years ago by the previous owner and it would violate that warranty if we put them on the roof. We have not needed any service on anything since we put these up, so that is good too. I recommend getting one of those robot lawn cutters, about $500 to $600, to cut the grass underneath the solar panels as you don't want to bang you head, and maybe get stitches or a concussion cutting the grass underneath them with our ground mounted panels. If Solar One asks me a year from now to update my thoughts, I might. This is the 3rd email they have sent me as to get my thoughts, so I am hoping not to get anymore emails until a year from now, if even that, after this response. I am not an "environmentalist", but financially, saving $200 a month, especially after the stock market has exploded over the last month, is a stupid/unwise investment putting the panels up. But I do have a "better feeling" about myself and the environment in putting the panels up. I also did get a chuckle to "good heartedly" say to my wife after she left a window open or a light on, "you know, electricity is not free, why is this light on?" and she would come back, "well, now, the electricity is free" But we have found out at this point and time, we still get to pay an electric bill. But the laugh was fun at the time. It is what it is..Update: December 2026, the solar panels created $29 of free electricity and in January $35 of free electricity..
I have to say 1 Source Solar impressed us. Since our first conversation to completion of the solar project at our farm we had excellent service. Our Contact Nathan Hamersley was always on top of our project. He under promised and over delivered. Everyone from the company and the contractors that were part of the project, were excellent. As a business owner myself I appreciate companies that call you back the day you call them. If we asked something they did not have an answer for, they would do the research and get back to us right away. They should do a training class for other service companies about customer service.
All's well that ends well. So even though I was unable to get a straight answer about the length of time between panel delivery and panel installation, or when the actual installation would take place, the installation is complete and is working well. The crews that did the panel installation and connecting them to the inverter, meter, and my electrical service were competent, honest, easy to work with, and they did a good job. So far it is working well, and no evidence of roof leaks.
We have been very happy with 1 Source Solar. Our solar specialist, Mike, has gone over and above giving us information and keeping us informed. Jeremy, the engineer, was here when the support poles were installed and care was taken since we have geothermal lines in our yard. The install crew was neat and tidy. The electrician, Bryant, knew what to do to make sure connections were done right. So far very pleased with communication from Heather in the office, and throughout the process. The proof will be in the pudding when we get our electric bill!
