The FIG team are an incredible group to work with. If you are considering a solar and/or battery installation, I would definitely recommend them. I do give 5-star reviews, when a company and its people earn them. FIG more than earned an excellent review from me.

When we decided to go with a solar and battery install, I spent over a year researching the science, products and local companies. I chose FIG because of the passion, expertise and due diligence they brought to the process.

The planning process and commitment of a solar install can be daunting. FIG understand this process and walked us through the steps with clarity and transparency. They know what they are doing and provided us with a turn-key installation that is safe, effective and meets required installation methods. This is a team of specialists with an impressive setup, and they are well networked in the Ottawa area. I was impressed with the trades and professionals that they had onsite at my house. The work done on my house was clean, and everyone who showed up was very professional.

The FIG team are quite knowledgeable in their field. These guys are not afraid to have you into their shop, where they install and test a variety of products and options for themselves. Because they make use of their own installations, they are very proactive and will offer good advice – something I found lacking with some other companies. They’re enthusiastic about their shop setup and are happy to talk you through all the different green solutions they use for their own company.

I believe that choosing the right installation company is incredibly important for any home renovation, including green technology. The process of going solar is one that takes time, there is a learning curve involved, and the industry and technology are constantly evolving. The FIG team understands the options based on your goals, and they know the process and work with excellent people in areas like roofing and electrical. I am careful whenever I choose people who perform any work on my house. I had confidence that the work performed on my house by FIG was done properly.

Lastly, I feel as though the team members at FIG remain accessible to me after the process is complete. I have had some brief conversations with them since, and they have continued to help me in a timely fashion. They are honestly just a good group of people who take pride in the work they do.

Thanks again to Mike, Dave, Jonathan, Todd, Mac, Graham and especially to Jake, who was always quick with a return call or email while we went through the process of our installation. And also, thanks to Seb and Dave for all the time and guidance they gave on the electrical options. (Sorry if I am leaving anyone off this list.)

I know 5 stars appears lame, but its really what they deserve here. The planning process was excellent with them making use of the latest tools to spec out our installation and even using a drone to get a birds eye view of our roof! The install went smoothly, and they kept me informed of the next steps and timings for the various visits and inspections. Plus they left us with some cider from the orchard! Boring as it may be, I really only have good things to say about the team. Cheers, and here's hoping there are many sunny days ahead ??

TLDR:
We wanted solar panels and a battery to both help reduce our grid usage and keep us going during power outages.

FIG Solar (formerly Execon Roofing and Solar) did an outstanding job on all accounts and I would work with them again without any hesitation. They did excellent work, used high quality products, and stuck to their original quote, even though things got more expensive for them thanks to inspections and mid-project regulation changes.

Long version:

Starting with the initial sales process, they were professional and really listened to what we wanted to do. Perhaps I’m a bit unusual, but I love this stuff and came to the table armed with a lot of YouTube knowledge. Most pros will groan when “this guy” shows up. But FIG solar was just as exited about all this as I was. They let me have a lot of input instead of just trying to sell me the same black box that they sold the last guy. This was markedly different from the other outfits I contacted.

The installation work was done very well. They had the panels up on the roof in one day even though it had just snowed. We’ve had no leaks or other issues up there. The electrical work looks very clean, organized, and well done. Even the battery and cabling in the garage looks impressive with the care they put into it.

Timing:

This project took quite a while from when we signed on the dotted line (first step) to when we had Ottawa Hydro in to install our bi-directional power meter (very last step). However, this was ENTIRELY do to the Electrical Safety Authority. We built to an approved plan, but every inspector that came by had a different opinion on what that should look like. And the regulations changed mid-project, which required a bunch of re-work.

Honestly, this was the most frustrating part. But the guys at FIG put an enormous amount of effort behind the scenes to get things approved. We’re very happy that they knew the regulations and codes so well and were willing to go to bat for us. They really knew how to jump through the hoops. Thankfully, they tell me that the next customer should have a substantially easier time with approvals.

Costs:

I felt the initial quote was very fair. I had looked up most of the equipment on-line. FIG Solar’s quote was pretty much bang on with what I knew the hardware should cost. The labour they priced out was very reasonable.

I think the most admirable part was how adamant they were to sticking to their original quote. It was very clear that the rework required by the ESA’s rather unhelpful guidance sent the costs well above their original estimates. There were several additional components that had to be added. FIG Solar flat out refused to ask for anything beyond the agreed upon quote, even when I asked if perhaps I should shoulder some of the spiraling costs. This was impressive.

Conclusion:

Our system is working fantastically. It has met or exceeded our expectations. It’s quite lovely to run the AC non-stop during a heat wave and not even think about what it will do to our hydro bill. And who would have thought anyone would look forward to a power outage?

I suspect at some point in the years to come, we’ll need some service or have some questions. I’m completely confident that FIG Solar will be there to help us out. I’m very happy to have them as a long-term partner.

FIG/Execon did a fantastic job installing our solar system. The consultation and design work was brilliant. For the installation, they arrived on time, did good quality work and provided excellent follow up and support to make sure the system runs great. Very glad we decided to use their services.
