This company has honestly given me such a run around. If you get panels make sure to mention you want critter guard.. the 1k up front will save you SO MUCH $$ and time... they of course never mentioned it as an option.. when we had an issue... like OCTOBER- they came out decided it was not their fault (which took a month I might add) - then I said that I would at least like to hear you are going to offer it to new customers so they don't have this issue of never hearing about these problems the person on the phone said "we dont get any incentive in telling you or installing it so we really dont have to mention it." This is 2 years after install.. we will still owe pretty much the whole balance.. honestly this move has caused more problems then it has been worth... do your research and do yourself a favor... find a better company.. a manage would never call me back.. just pawned the conversation off to other employees. Not a great company at all.. BTW - its February and the roof is STILL NOT FIXED

We originally signed with another solar company and quickly realized something didn’t feel right. Promises were made about “American-made equipment,” but after doing our own research, we discovered the inverters were being sourced overseas from Alibaba. That was a huge red flag. We also learned the company didn’t even hold their own contractor’s license and was subcontracting the entire install. It felt like commissions were being prioritized over our long-term investment and peace of mind.

That’s when we connected with Michael Shafer at ION Solar — and everything changed.

Michael helped us cancel the predatory contract, walked us through every detail transparently, and made sure we fully understood what we were getting. No pressure. No gimmicks. Just straight answers and education.

ION Solar completed the entire installation in-house, which gave us tremendous confidence in the quality and accountability of the work. The professionalism, communication, and attention to detail were on another level.

If you’re considering solar, do yourself a favor and talk to Michael first. He genuinely cares about doing what’s right for the customer and making sure you’re protected long term. We now have peace of mind knowing we chose one of the best solar companies in the area — and in the nation.

I was initially impressed with the sales pitch, reviews, and early follow-up (August 2025). However, as weeks, then months went buy, customer service became a repeating horror movie. The sales rep assigned to me blocked my telephone number and left ION. I was not provided with a dedicated contact person to handle the poor communication between customer service, inspections, construction, financing, etc. Scheduled appointments turned to no shows, where I took off from work to be available. Or, workers showed up before the scheduled appointment, and I had to leave work to meet them because to reschedule could take weeks. Finally, in late November the system passed inspection and was supposed to be up and running. Now, 12/17/25 I'm waiting for the communications between the panels and the separate monitoring company to be fixed. Also, I'm unable to download the monitoring app and cannot get help with that. The operations manager has yet to return my calls; nor can I get anyone to follow-up.
I'm now stuck with a $32,000 financing agreement that begins 01/01/2026 for something that doesn't work.
This is, by far, the largest and most costly mistake I've ever made. ION is bullshit. My advice---do not waste your time, health, and money on ION. The company is not worth one star.

I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous at first because I saw a bunch of one-star reviews for Ion Solar. But when I looked closer, I realized none of those bad reviews were for the Richmond office, so I decided to go for it. I’m so glad I did!

The whole process was honestly one of the smoothest home projects I’ve ever done. Everyone I dealt with was super friendly, professional, and kept me updated every step of the way. Everything happened exactly when they said it would, and the installation crew did an awesome job: quick, clean, and really knew what they were doing.

I’ve had solar before in another state with a different company, and Ion Solar Richmond blew them out of the water. The difference in communication and overall quality was night and day.

If you’re in the Richmond area and thinking about going solar, don’t let the negative reviews from other places scare you off. The Richmond team is fantastic - I’d 100% recommend them!

I wasn’t really planning on going solar until one day a young guy from ION Solar knocked on my door and asked if I’d be open to seeing a free energy report. I figured, why not? Once we sat down and went over the numbers, I couldn’t believe how much money I was wasting every month with my regular power company. The savings were honestly way more than I expected.

The energy specialist who helped me was amazing—super knowledgeable, patient, and not pushy at all. He broke everything down in a way that actually made sense and answered all my questions. I had already met with a couple of other solar companies before, but ION beat them by a long shot—both in price and professionalism.

From start to finish, the whole installation process was smooth and easy. They kept me updated at every step, and their team handled all the paperwork and inspections without any stress on my end. My panels were installed faster than I thought, and everything looks great.

If you’re thinking about going solar, definitely give ION a shot. I’m really glad I did—it’s one of the best home decisions I’ve made!
