If you are looking to build your own custom backyard oasis and want to manage your own build, DIY Pools and Spas provides an incredible, rock-solid framework. Their overall process, engineering plans, and step-by-step roadmap for owner-builders are excellent and give you exactly what you need to successfully run your own project.I saved $30,000 but most importantly have a high end quality build.I had some speed bumps with DIY but they quickly stepped in, heard my concerns and rectified the situation. Second half of the project I received excellent personalized consulting to help me through some complications and issues with subs.My Advice for Future Owner-Builders: Absolutely use DIY Pools and Spas for their core process, training engineering, and master blueprints—the system itself works beautifully. Just be incredibly selective and firm about what you need and use AI to help you validate. Also, this system isn’t for everyone. You need to put in the work and time. It took me about 200 hours of my time but I also took this to another level and micromanaged much more than most.
I am VERY unhappy with DIY. I paid the large fee upfront, I think $4k-$5k for the design and support. All we received was a dream and some videos. We worked on the rendering and had to go back and forth a few times. Each time, 5-10 day turn around. After 7-8 weeks, we finally had the rendering of what we wanted. I knew I would need a geotechnical report, so I paid $1900 for the souls report - which DIY had nothing to do with. After they sent the design over to their engineering team, it comes back…sorry, this is too large or complex. They actually offered for me to find my own engineer. Why do I need them? This process is a shell game. They will give you a rendering, which any pool company will do. They will let you see videos of the process, but they’re on YouTube. And by the way, they gave me a rough cost on my lazy river pump system of 12k. The actual quote from river flow was $23k. I cannot in good conscious recommend this service, as they do not deliver as promised.
The process works but is not for everyone. Great help with engineering drawings, backyard conceptual pictures guidance through the permitting process. I got estimates of $80,000 for a basic concrete box. My son and I installed a 18'x33' oval semi-inground with water heater, framed deck and screened enclosure for under $45,000.
The pool pricing in Cocoa Beach FL was quite high post Covid. After doing a lot of research and speaking with others that used a pool contracter, I decided to act as the homeowner/builder for my pool. As an engineer I drafted the general shape and features that I wanted in my pool and provided it to the DIY team. They took that concept and turned it into reality... it looks awesome!!! At this stage in the program I've approved the general construction plans and they are currently with the engineering company to make permit ready plans. I'm confident the well designed step-by-step program will succesfully guide anyone through the full process. My goal is to have the pool complete within 4 months of signing up for the DIY program. I will update this review upon project completion.
